Session 4: Basic Methods and Study Designs in Cross-Cultural Psychology: Common Problems and Solutions – Michael Bender
In this 1.5h webinar, Dr. Bender will share insights on how we can avoid and address basic issues that are common in cross-cultural research. For further reading, he recommends van de Vijver and Leung (2021). Dr. Bender will cover fundamentals such as sample selection, choice of a theoretical framework, and test adaptation procedures. Topics that will be covered are:
– Who to sample? Why samples that are convenient can be a curse and a blessing (study design, sample selection rationale).
– Dos and Don’ts when translating into a language you are not familiar with (test adaptation).
– Comparing scores across (cultural) groups – can we compare what we assess, and the scores we get from participants (construct validity, differential item functioning, equivalence)?
The webinar is meant to be interactive, and there will be room for questions. Content is tailored for starting researchers or those that have recently developed an interest in more culturally informed studies and are new to the field.
